Handgun Qualification License (HQL)
Course Cost - $150
course DESCRIPTION
The Handgun Qualification License (HQL) training is a four-hour block of instruction which includes classroom instruction on state firearm law, home firearm safety, handgun mechanisms and operation, and a component that requires the applicant to demonstrate the ability to safely fire a handgun. Unless otherwise exempt, as of October 1, 2013, a Maryland Resident must possess a valid Handgun Qualification License before they may purchase, rent, or receive a handgun. The instructional portion of the course will occur in the classroom. The operation and handling demonstration of the course will either occur in the classroom (via simulation) or at a secure firing range.
Approved HQL training courses are offered by Maryland State Police approved Qualified Handgun Instructors. Students must be 18 years of age to enroll. Training is valid for 3 years and must be completed prior to submitting an application for a Handgun Qualification License. Individuals may not purchase a firearm until 21 years of age. The Handgun Qualification License is only needed for purchasing, transferring, or renting a regulated firearm after October 1, 2013 in Maryland. You do not need a Handgun Qualification License to own a gun you already have. In some classes extra time will be built into the course to allow for each student to have their fingerprints taken (provided by a third party service at extra cost to student), which is required for the HQL application as well as to apply online for their HQL from the Maryland State Police with aid from the instructor.
NOTE: Fingerprinting and the MSP online application requires an additional fee payable to outside vendors.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
We will NEVER do only the minimum required training for civil reasons. At Black Hawk Academy we believe it takes time to properly train armed security officers to protect you and your property. Black Hawk Academy goes over and beyond requirements with a sixteen hours plus course which is far more in depth than any other training given by other training companies or instructor/trainers. Black Hawk Academy courses only require fifty rounds to certify our instructors work very close with each student long before they go live on the range. If the student requires more, Black Hawk Academy will work with each person to improve their scores. It is a lot more to firing a firearm in self defense than just going to the range and shooting at a target that is not putting you in danger and then leaving. At Black Hawk Academy we teach survival and NOT target shooting. If a student goes to the range and fires a lot of rounds and they do not learn the proper tactics then they have only learned to fire a lot of rounds improperly.
Cost does NOT include ammo and if you bring your own ammo it MUST be approved by the Black Hawk Academy staff before it can be used on the range.
